What the Foundation is?

The Academy of Medical and Health Science of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands was created on the 5th April 1878 by the merger of two independent institutions founded in Catalonia within five years of each other: El Laboratorio, founded in 1872, and the Academy of Medical Science, founded in 1877.

Over the course of its history of more than a century, the organisation has never stopped evolving, and currently has around a hundred affiliated associations, specialised and affiliated societies, as well as some twenty branch offices, spread out over Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

Its members seek to continue to promote the institution, and for this reason, in 1996 they decided to create a Foundation to handle the management of the academy’s activities, within the framework of prevailing legislation (Law 1/1982, dated 3 March, regarding private foundations).

So, the Fundació Privada de l'Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques i de la Salut de Catalunya i de Balears (Private Foundation of the Medical and Health Science Academy of Catalonia and the Balearics) was founded with the following aims:

  1. Promoting research within the health sciences sphere.
  2. Promoting better teaching.
  3. Promoting the continuing education and training of health professionals.
  4. Supporting all scientific, cultural and other activities to do with the health sciences, either directly or through the scientific societies belonging to the Academy.

Setting up of the Foundation

The Foundation was founded by means of a public document authorised in Barcelona on 1st July 1996 and entered in the Register of Foundations of the Directorate General of Law and Legal Entities of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya on the 28th January 1997, with number 1038.

Beneficiaries

The beneficiaries of the Foundation are all those people, professionals and students involved in the health sciences field and organisations having to do with medicine and healthcare.

Headquarters of the Foundation

The Fundació Privada de l’Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques de Catalunya i de Balears (Private Foundation of the Medical Sciences Academy of Catalonia and the Balearics) has its headquarters in Barcelona, C/Major de Can Caralleu, 1-7 - 08017.
